Session Wrap-Up:
While the final days of the legislative session weren’t without their challenges, we’ve seen some victories, a setback, and important issues left unresolved. Here’s a quick recap:
Elk Hunting Changes:
- The landowner-on-own-land elk bill (SB 173) unfortunately passed. The SDGFP Commission will now draft rules for a landowner-only license.
- SDWF will continue to: Monitor the rulemaking process and provide critical feedback to ensure the best possible outcomes for wildlife and fair access.
Victories:
- Pink Hunting Gear! (HB 1228): Adds blaze pink as a legal option for big game hunters, awaiting the Governor’s signature.
- Habitat Conservation License Plate (HB 1119): Passed! Support conservation when you renew your plates.
What’s Next:
- Final Session Day: March 8th
- Veto Day: March 25th (the Governor has a chance to veto bills passed in the final days)
- SDWF Advocacy Continues: We’ll stay vigilant and work to protect wildlife, habitat, and public access to hunting and fishing.
Enjoy the Outdoors! Now that spring weather is approaching, remember:
- Go fishing and explore South Dakota’s beautiful waterways.
- Gear up for the upcoming turkey season.
Thank you for your support! Your engagement made a difference this legislative session.
Let’s stay connected and work together for the future of wildlife in South Dakota!
